OUGD601 - Mental Health - Research

Attitudes to Mental Illness 2014 - Time for Change SURVEY

We need to adopt a far more tolerant attitude toward people with mental illness in our society, from 83% in 2008 to 91% in 2014

Less emphasis should be placed on protecting the public from people with mental illness - agreement increased from 29% to 35%

Residents have nothing to fear from people coming into their neighbourhood to obtain mental health services - agreement increased from 59% to 70%

Mental illness is an illness like any other - 74% to 78%

No-one has the right to exclude people with mental illness from their neighbourhood -
74% to 83%

People with mental health problems should have the same right to a job as anyone else -
66% to 80%

“ Analysis of summary scores across all of the community attitudes to mental illness (CAMI) statements confirmed that overall attitudes towards mental illness have become more positive since 2008. Despite a decrease in scores from 2013 to 2014, the 2014 score remained higher than that obtained in 2012. “

“ If a friend had a mental health problem, I know what advice to give them to get professional help’ increased from 63% in 2009 to 68% in 2014‘, with a significant increase from 64% in 2013 to 68% in 2014. “

“ The proportion of people saying they know someone close to them who has had some kind of mental illness has increased from 58% in 2009 to 65% in 2014.

Awareness of mental health advertising and experience of mental illness -

“Respondents who were aware of mental health advertising were more likely than those who had not seen or heard any advertising to say that they knew someone close to them who had some kind of mental illness. 78% of those who had seen advertising said that they knew someone with mental illness, compared with just 59% of those who had not seen any advertising. Those aware of advertising were also more likely to think that people with a mental illness experience stigma and discrimination (94%) than those who had not seen advertising (85%).

There were no significant differences between those who had seen advertising and those who had not, in the likelihood to go to a GP for help, how comfortable they would feel about talking to a friend or family member or talking to an employer if they had a mental health problem. “

Stigma and discrimination ruin lives. They deny people with mental health problems the opportunity to live their lives to the full. They deny people relationships, work, education, hope and the chance to live an ordinary life that others take for granted. -

The World Health Organisation and the World Psychiatric Association believe that stigma is one of the greatest challenges facing people with mental health problems.
(World Health Organization (2001) Mental Health 2001—Mental health: new understanding, new hope. Geneva: World Health Organization. Sartorius, N. (1997) )

A consumer is someone who can make the decision whether or not to purchase an item at the store, which can be influenced by marketing and advertisements. Each and every consumer is influenced by their own brand perception and buying decisions which depends on a various number of factors.

The problem/stigma may be getting smaller/more positive but that doesn’t change how many people who might have mental health problems, more and more people are feeling comfortable to talk about their mental state as people opinions have developed over the last 10 years.

Attitudes are formed at young ages. To stop people from continuing to abuse people with mental illness you need to educate the young people

Other Mental Health Surveys

A main part of my reserach has been looking through mental health surveys these have given me nessarcary information that I have needed to help inform facts with both my essay and in my practical work. These help to give an understand of the current state of mental health in the UK and what is lready been done to help the stigma. What I have learnt from a lot of these is that there is a lot of information surrounding mental health as it is an illness and one that needs to be done is a looking how we present information to people to make it easier to digest.
