Essay - This is Graphic Design - Research

To start my essay research, I used many online sources to gather my information that would be relevant about my research question "What is the role of print media in the digital age?". Making sure that I gathered enough information was important as if I did not gather the information before writing no of my points would be backed up by fact, if they're not backed up by fact the essay basally becomes irrelevant as it has not been supported by someone else's opinion.

I will be using all of the links and books below to develop my understanding for my research question, these books and links will help to give me the knowledge I need to know to be able to write my essay. I will be able to quote and reference back to these websites and books ignorer to support my argument.

Requirements for Practical Research - Study Task 06

Practical Research - Study Task 06

Task 1

Technique(s) -

- Traditional methods of print and how they are used today.
- A publication based around the sub-culture of hipster print.
- Digital media and how it effects print media (mix them up)

Content -

- Come up with a brief for what subject I want to focus on from the research question. I could look into who are reading print based media and why they are reading it, is it because of they way it looks (cool)?
- A series of work that shows who these people are, almost like stereotypes.

Communication -

- How I am I going to communicate? I want to communicate what impact print based media is having in the digital age and who is reading it.
- How will this be received? What will this suggest to people that don't engage in print media and how does it effect the people that do?

Research -

- Visual research, certain publications or designers that purely uses print based media to speak to the audience and what makes people want too read or be interested in that.
- Primary research - talk and possibly interview people on their views of the way print media has made a come back in the last couple of years, see how they think it is impacting that particular movement of design now.

Exporations / Evaluations -

- Evaluate whether the technique I have used to further explore my research question is accurate to what is going on in todays print world. Evaluate who the final outcome appeals too this will further  support my question.

Task 2

What is my research question?

"What is the role of print media in the digital age?"

Hypothesis

When looking into my research question I want to try and show how print media has involved its own sub-culture that has helped to popularise print based media. Whether this is through publications, screen prints, letter press I want to investigate how people use and inter tract with print media and if it is just for material purposes or other.

What are the contexts of my research interests?

Martialism, do people just like print publications because of what they look like and how can you justify only having things like that just for collecting or for a shelf piece. The experience one would get when getting something that it real rather than in a digital format.

Ownership, is having a physical print of copy of something better than being able to view it through a screen. Having a copy of a book or publication is a personal experience and can be kept for years and years, also the personal experience could include a social history.

How will my practical work answer the research question?

The work that I will produce, will help to support my final point in my research question, I am going too look at the different types of stereotypes that are involved in print media in todays digital world. I will look at who those people are and what they do, why the are interested in print media.

What methods will I use?

Research - I will use primary research too find out who the stereotypes are and why people read or are interested in certain areas of print I record who they are and how they present themselves. Secondary research, this will help me back up my primary research, I can look see things from a wider perspective I can obverse the print culture of today.

Develop/create - To create my practical work I will be looking at producing a series of prints that show the types of people that are involved in the print world today. Wether this is a person who has been involved in print for a long time or a new/young designer interested in collecting and becoming part of print world.

Test - testing my work, I will show me work in some sort of crit or space were people can judge the work produced to see whether they agree with the point that i am trying to make. Is there a developing sub-culture in the print world and how it that being influenced by the digital world.

Timeline

08/12/2015 - 05/01/2016 // research into the print world who reads what? How does it influence the way people are (where they go, what clothes they wear, the things they do).

05/01/2016 - 12/01/2016 // primary research talk to peers and people in the print industry about views on target market who read what etc - possibly produce a survey. Then evaluate the outcome of this.

12/01/2016 - 26/01/2016 // look into possible ways in which I could present said work, whether this is as a publication or as a series of printed illustrations. What is the most effective.

26/01/2016 - 26/02/2016 // research into methods of printing and designers that are relevant to my practical work.

26/02/2016 - 29/03/2016 // produce work, allowing time for error and experimentation within this period.

29/04/2016 - 26/04/2016 // get everything ready that needs to be submitted, this includes blog post that support practical work, design boards and final essay.
