Study Task 04 - Summarising and Paraphrasing

Summarising and Paraphrasing

The idea of the lecture was to learn how to summarise a a pieces of text so that it give you a better understanding of what you have read and it also could help someone else understand what you have learnt from the text. The idea of summarising is not to talk in the third person because then you begin to give an opinion which is not what summarising is all about.

Meredith Davis' Design Theory, is talking to you about the how digital technology has come into play in the last 30 years and how it is affecting the design world. Though out the text Davis is not expressing her opinion on the subject Davis is clearly using her voice to state facts and explain to the reader was certain theories are about and how they are effecting the world. Davis is not trying to cover up different parts when Davis talks about graphic design, Davis clearly states that 'there is no single, unified theory for graphic design' which shows her tone of voice openly  because Davis is letting the reader think about the possibilities of that particular theory. When discussing the disadvantages and advantages of developing technology in graphic design Davis raises the point that 'graphic design press was completely preoccupied with debates concerning the loss of traditional craft and designer control represented by the introduction of the Mac, design software and desktop publishing' Davis is suggesting to the reader that the digital age has taken away the specialist jobs and now it is making it easier for everyone to do it.

Davis goes on to say that 'digital technology restricted the work of graphic designers and opened new formal opportunities that were not possible under previous methods for generating type and image'. What Davis is trying to explain is that the print age is still alive and people just wanted to work on computers and thats not what should be doing, designers should be working on mediums that best support the work, but at points the digital age almost killed elements of graphic design. Davis is still open to the digital age it seems, she wants to embrace the digital age and use it too its full extent but Davis remind us that we shouldn't for get where it all began and how it came to be the way it is today.
